Toll Fraud

What is Toll Fraud?

Toll fraud is defined as the unauthorised use of a company's phone system, whereby the perpetrator makes calls without paying, but in particular relates to phone systems being hacked and the victim’s lines being used to make calls, often to expensive long-distance locations.

Toll fraud is, and should be, a concern for any business with a PBX.

Any company with telephone lines (analogue lines, ISDN channels or SIP Trunks) can become a victim to this fraud. The scammers often work out of hours so even companies that scan their traffic in office hours still remain vulnerable. It is believed that over 11% of crimes go unreported as companies know arrests are very rare and victims are concerned that bad PR covering their own company's security measures will seriously damage their reputation.
 

Often business are not made aware that they have been hacked until they receive telephone bills for what could be thousands of pounds.

Is SIP secure?


Absolutely!  A properly configured and managed SIP service will give you the service assurance you are looking for:

 

  • We only employ IP authentication.

  • We can build private layer 2 VLANS to customer devices that support RFC 1918 addressing. On this basis the endpoints cannot be seen from the public Internet.

  • Traffic patterns on the Session Border Controller (SBC) are monitored for anomalous behaviour and appropriate alerts deployed

  • Rate and channel restrictions are place on all endpoints to ensure that the SBC cannot be overloaded.

  • All SBC’s are deployed in fully secure premises

  • Fully compliant with the Information Security Standard ISO27001 and the Business Continuity standard ISO22301

  • SIP trunking SBCs and Portal are penetration tested by professional 3rd party consultants to offer assurance that the security is fully effective
