Windows 7 End-of-Life is here!

January 14, 2020

The End of an Era! Windows 7 End-of-Life (EoL) is today, and this marks the end of a generation.

It only seems like 5 minutes ago, back in 2009 that Windows 7 was released, and following the abysmal performance of its predecessor, Windows Vista, Windows 7 out-the-box was very similar to today’s standard, in the way that it just worked. People instantly fell in love with how easy Windows 7 was to use, when compared to Windows vista, and how much better it performed on their devices.

As for statistics, Windows 7 had the most market share on Windows devices, All the way until 2018, where Windows 10 finally passed it, but only by a small margin, as seen in the graph below. (Note, The graph only splits Windows and Mac OS 10.13’s market share up, meaning this graph isn’t a representation of all devices, only those with Windows or Mac OS 10.13 installed) (Source – Click Here)

So, what happens now?

Well I’m glad you asked. Windows 7 EoL Doesn’t mean that your Windows 7 machines will simply cease to work, however, if you do have Windows 7 within your Home/Work infrastructure, an update to your Operating system is crucial.

Why Is it Crucial?

You’re full of good questions, aren’t you! It’s crucial because when a Microsoft Operating system is in its final stage (End-of-Life, known as EoL) Microsoft stop publishing important security patches, and bug patches. This means any security flaws and bugs found on Windows 7, from this day forward will NOT be fixed. And yes, as Windows 7 is such a popular operating system, even to this day, I have a feeling that a lot of people will try and attack these now vulnerable people’s computers.

What can I do about it?

I’m glad you asked! It is possible, to install the latest version of Windows (Windows 10) on Most, if not all Windows 7 machines. This is because Microsoft have made Windows 10’s Minimum requirements the EXACT same as Windows 7's, meaning when you upgrade your software, you most likely WON’T need a hardware upgrade! Obviously, this makes the crucial upgrade a lot cheaper.
